PURPOSE:To improve the selectivity of the titled compound in the hydration reaction of an alkylene oxide, economically, without producing by-products such as dialkylene glycol, etc., by using a tubular reactor having a specific length-to-diameter ratio. CONSTITUTION:The titled compound is produced by the hydration reaction of an alkylene oxide using a tubular reactor having an L/D ratio of >=3,000 wherein L is the length and D is the diameter of the tube. The reaction temperature is usually 20-250 deg.C, preferably 50-200 deg.C and the reaction pressure is adjusted preferably to the level to keep the alkylene oxide in liquid phase at the above reaction temperature, usually 0-30kg/cm<2>. The reaction is carried out for about 5-200min, preferably for about 10-100min. The amount of water used as a reaction raw material is especially preferably 5-20mol per 1mol of alkylene oxide. Any type of the reactor such as spiral reactor, etc., may be used according to the side condition provided that the L/D ratio is >=3,000.
