PURPOSE:To enable abnormal rotation to be securely detected, by a system wherein each type face is provided alternately with two kinds of discrimination information, and the discrimination information being detected is compared with correct discrimination information to detect an abnormal rotation of a type wheel. CONSTITUTION:With regard to the type faces 3 of type wheels 1-1-1-n, odd- numbered type faces 3a are formed from a white resin, while even-numbered type faces 3b are formed from a black resin, they are detected by reflection-type photosensors 11-1-11-n, and detection signals B-1-B-n from an odd/even detecting circuit 12 are inputted into a rotation abnormality detecting circuit 13. On the other hand, a printing operation controlling circuit 20 outputs selected position signals C-1-C-n based on printing information, and solenoids 10-1-10-n are operated according to rotating positions determined by an encoder 14 to set the position of each of the type wheels. Simultaneously, the selected position signals C-1-C-n are inputted into the circuit 13, and when the signals B, C disaccord with each other, an abnormality detection signal G is outputted to the controlling circuit 20, which stops a motor 21 and operates an alarm device. Accordingly, an abnormal rotation can be securely detected.
