PURPOSE:To correctly detect a position for a wire electrode in a contactless manner, by feeding gas to a pair of air nozzles, provided so as to interpose the wire electrode, and providing a diaphragm, which responsively operates to a difference of back pressure, while a laser interferometer which detects the displacement of said diaphragm. CONSTITUTION:An electrode position detector performs action such that the detector generates a laser beam to be emitted from a laser oscillator 15 forming an interference fringe on an image sensor 18 and storing a pattern of said interference fringe in a memory unit 21. Next the detector, actuating a pump 13 to feed gas into a housing 2, jets the gas toward a wire electrode 1 from air nozzles 3 and 4, and when a diaphragm 8 is deformed, the pattern of the image sensor 18 also changes. Here the detector, being set so as to align the both patterns by adjusting an adjusting screw 5 and 6 while observing a display unit 22, starts wire cut electric discharge machining. Accordingly, said detector enables a position of the wire electrode 1 to be correctly detected in a contactless manner.
