PURPOSE:To make the formation of multi-color images without positional deviation possible by providing a means for detecting the rates of the positional deviations corresponding respectively to the moving direction of a material to be transferred and the direction orthogonal therewith and storage means for storing the rates of the positional deviations. CONSTITUTION:The rate 1x of the horizontal positional deviation of the paper P fed to a copying machine A and the rate 1y of the vertical positional deviation are detected by the 1st and 2nd optical detectors 130, 134. The rates 1x, 1y are stored in a quick disk Qd. The error between the rate of the positional deviation stored in the disk Qd of a copying machine B and the rate of the positional deviation to be detected in the machine B is determined and a lens block for variable powers is moved in accordance with the error at the same time,the operation timing of a resist roller pair 19 is shifted, then the copying operation is executed. The formation of the image complying with the reference position of the paper is thus made possible even if the position of the paper to be supplied to the transfer part deviates horizontally or vertically.
