PURPOSE:To prevent xanthan gum from being decomposed and to thereby allow the gum to satisfy the purpose of use even at high temperatures, by adding a thiol derivative of a heterocyclic compound to an aqueous xanthan gum solution. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous xanthan gum solution is stabilized by adding thereto a thiol derivative of a heterocyclic compound (e.g., 2-thioimidazolidone, benzoxazole-2-thiol or 4-ketothiazolidine-2-thiol). Although xanthan gum is widely used in a variety of industrial fields such as petroleum drilling, ceramic industry and paint industry, its performance is frequently lowered and this tendency is marked especially at high temperatures. Xanthan gum can be prevented from decomposition and can fully satisfy its object of use by adding, preferably, 0.05-20pts.wt., per 100pts.wt. xanthan gum, said stabilizer.
