PURPOSE:To eliminate a flicker even in AC electric field driving by driving each upper and lower, and right and left adjacent picture element in the same field with electric signals which differ in polarity. CONSTITUTION:Some picture element electrode 1' is applied with an electric signal which differ in polarity from its upper and lower, and left and right adjacent picture element electrodes. Thus, electric signals which differ in polarity between upper and lower, and right and left picture element electrodes are applied to all picture element electrodes to constitute the 1st field. Then, in the second field, electric signals which is inverse polarity to the first field are applied to the picture element electrode 1'. Then, all the picture element electrodes are applied with electric signals which differ in polarity from the 1st field. Liquid crystal layer areas which are driven positively and negatively are present as extremely small units while equalized in number, so the mean polarity of the whole field is uniformed and the difference in the quantity of light transmitted through the liquid crystal layer is eliminated to prevent a flicker from appearing.
