Hair straightening composition based on an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkali metal alcoholate, consisting of a) 40 to 80% by weight of liquid paraffin and/or petrolatum and/or a solution of polyethylene in liquid paraffin, b) 0.5 to 8% by weight of lithium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or an aliphatic alcoholate of lithium, sodium or potassium with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, c) 2 to 59.5% by weight of at least one ethoxylated saturated or unsaturated C8-C18-fatty alcohol and/or ethoxylated C6-C14-alkylphenol with in each case 2 to 30 ethylene oxide units in the molecule, d) 0 to 10% by weight of water and, where appropriate, up to 40% by weight of additives customary for alkaline hair straightening compositions, and a method for straightening hair, in the application of which the abovementioned hair straightening composition displays an excellent cutaneous tolerability.
