The invention relates to an apparatus for sorting printing matter such as newspapers, magazines, booklets or the like. It contains an endlessly circulating conveyor belt (5) or the like which is inclined in relation to the horizontal plane and extends along the path section which runs through a sorting station (18). The conveyor belt (5) has successive printed matter compartments which are each assigned to one printed item and are open downwards, at least in the region of the sorting station (18). Upstream of and in the sorting station (18), there is situated a support (37) for printed-matter holding-down devices (38), which support also circulates endlessly and at the same speed as the conveyor belt (5) or the like and is situated parallel to, at a distance from and opposite the conveyor belt (5) or the like. It supports holding-down devices at a distance from the printed matter compartments (32) on the side (42) facing the conveyor belt (5) or the like, which holding-down devices are preloaded on the side (42) facing the conveyor belt (5) or the like in the direction of the latter, are each assigned to a printed matter compartment (32) and hold a printed item (14) contained in the said compartment (32) against the conveyor belt (5) or the like. The conveyor belt (5) or the like and the holding-down device support (37) run in the same direction in the region of the common path section. In the sorting station (18), a detaching device (73) assigned to the holding-down devices (38) is arranged at at least one ejection point (72) and when it is actuated, raises the incoming holding-down device (38), against the pretensioning, from the printed item (14) held by the holding-down device (38). <IMAGE>
