A low pressure casting mould is bottom fed, so that the cavity is entirely filled by rising metal. The mould is produced by embedding a destroyable pattern in a particulate moulding material, e.g. inter alia, zircon sand. The pattern may be moulded polystyrene, coated with a wash, e.g. an aqueous ceramic slurry, and allowed to dry. It comprises the shape to be cast, an ingate, and any required runner system. The ingate fits an orifice in the mould support base, through which molten metal is fed, either from a conventional low pressure furnace, or from a special melter/ holder by an electromagnetic pump. |
