For satisfactory printing, high-performance thermal printers require initial heating above the normal ambient temperature since the time available for heating up the heating elements is very short. Otherwise, a very high degree of residual heat, which must be conducted away as quickly as possible, remains due to the high heating-up temperature. For this purpose, the invention provides, for a thermal printing head with a plurality of heating elements arranged in a row on a substrate (7), a substrate carrier (1) which has a channel (2, 3, 5) directly under the substrate (7) in the region of the heating elements. The said channel (2, 3, 5) is arranged in the circuit of a circulation system of a fluid or gaseous medium. The circulating medium is kept at a constant temperature via a control device, which temperature corresponds to the provided initial heating of the heating elements. <IMAGE>
