In a device for measuring and monitoring the filling level of a liquid container, in particular the oil level of a motor vehicle engine, having a light source, having a light receiver and having a probe, made of light-conducting material, which dips into the liquid and has a plurality of stepped reflection faces, in each case two of which reflection faces form a pair of reflection faces, according to the invention some of the pairs of reflection faces are rotated about the longitudinal axis of the probe with respect to the other pairs of reflection faces. This has the purpose of permitting simple and reliable measuring of different liquid levels with sufficient differences in intensity, for example even in the case of large fluctuations of the ambient temperature.
