PURPOSE:To perform the reading control in the subscanning direction by providing a reading control signal generating means at a scanner part or an original feed part in response to the distance shifted relatively in the subscanning direction of an original and reading the picture signals according to the control signal. CONSTITUTION:A scanner part 1 is fixed at an original feed part 2, and an original 4 on which the picture information recorded is held between a paper feed roll 12 and a drive roll 5 as well as between upper and lower guide rolls 15a and 15b respectively. The roll 12 is driven by a drive motor 14 via a timing belt 13 and the original 4 is carried in the subcarrying direction A. In this case, the surface of the original 4 is irradiated by an illumination lamp 11 and this reflected light forms an image on a solid state image pickup element 9 through an image forming lens 10. A reading control signal generating means 6 provided to the roll 5 produces the main scan control signal in response to the distance shifted in the direction A. Then the electric charge stored in the element 9 is read out based on said main scan control signal to read the original 4. Thus the reading control is possible in the subscanning direction.
