Gold refining employing electrolysis. Electrolytes which contain nitric acid and similar nitrogen oxidizers have been found to liberate noxious oxides. The present invention avoids the problem by substituting peroxides or a nascent oxygen source. The gold is electrolysed into the novel electrolyte, the dissolved gold ions segregated from the cathode by a semi-permeable barrier, insoluble impurities separated from the gold containing liquidus, and the gold selectively reduced to the metallic form from the liquidus by a selective reducing agent. A unitary apparatus for the method comprises electrolytic cell (10), separation compartment (21), precipitation compartment (20), gold anode (14) suspended from anode terminal (13), immersed in electrolyte (11), to an electrolyte level (12). The anode (14) is surrounded by semi-permeable ceramic cup (15). Cathode (17) is located a suitable distance from anode (14). |
