A filter for potable liquids comprises a housing (1) filled with a particulate filter medium (2), such as sand. A porous and permeable sintered membrane (3) extends across the housing to support the filter medium (2) and to form an interface between the filter bed and channels (8) underlying the membrane (3) through which the filtered beverage leaves the filter and a backwashing liquid enters the filter. The membrane (3) disperses the backwashing flow over the entire area of the filter bed so that complete fluidisation occurs. In a preferred embodiment the membrane (3) is formed of sintered high density polyethylene. |
