PURPOSE:To attain the edition by a character by reading an existing document by an image sensor, etc., separating automatically characters, numerics and marks on the read-out document into one character according to a picture element distribution. CONSTITUTION:A document input device 1 makes the document into a binarization picture at a sufficient resolution level to express the document with the group of character picture elements and fetched said picture to a memory device 2. The histogram of the number of black picture elements on each row of the inputted picture is calculated. In terms of a periphery distribu tion in a row direction, a range where the character exist exceeds a certain value, and the range where characters exist is segmented by the row. In the same manner, a periphery distribution in a column directionn is obtained to separate characters, numerics, marks, etc., into one character, and the binarization pattern of each memory and its appearing order are stored in a memory 6. At the time of edition, information stored in the memory 6 is read out to display on a display device 3, and addition, deletion, correction of the character pattern, line feed, etc., are executed by the character.
