PURPOSE:To enable reduction in the film thickness of an insulating layer and to enable satisfactory maintenance of the magnetic characteristic of an upper shielding layer by oxidizing a part of an MR film having a magneto-resistance effect into a stripe shape and making said part nonmagnetic. CONSTITUTION:The surface layer of an MR film 1 having a magneto-resistance effect is bisected diagonally into a stripe shape to a flat surface by regions 2 which are oxidized and are made nonmagnetic. The regions 2 are formed by providing a protective layer consisting of oxide such as SiO2 and annealing said layer in an atmosphere contg. oxygen. The magnetizing direction 3 of the MR film 1 is made coincident with the direction of the stripe by such regions 2 and are inclined 45 deg. with the directon of the detecting current by which an optimum bias is obtd. Insulating layers 6, 7 are thereby made thinner than the layers formed by a method for forming geometrically ruggedness and since the underlying layer of an upper shielding layer 8 is flat, the satisfactory magnetic characteristic is maintained. |
