An improved process for making anthra[1,9-od]-pyrazol--6(2H)-ones of formula
<Chemistry id="chema01" num="0001"><Image id="ia01" he="29" wi="69" file="IMGA0001.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>from 1,4-dichloro-5,8-disubstituted-9,10-anthracenediones of formula
<Chemistry id="chema02" num="0002"><Image id="ia02" he="24" wi="63" file="IMGA0002.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>and a hydrazine and a diamine is disclosed. The compounds produced have antibacterial, antifungal, antileukaemic, and antitumor activity.
