PURPOSE:To attain the discontinuation of retrieval, the second input of the retrieving conditions and the highly efficient retrieval in a comparatively simple structure, by displaying the interim process of the number of retrieving hits during the retrieval and then stopping immediately the display when an error is detected owing to the increase of the number of the hits. CONSTITUTION:When a binder is designated, a binder catalog on a data base DB is retrieved. Then another binder having the same title structure TT as said designated binder is retrieved. With input of the retrieving conditions, the all retrieved binders are retrieved again under the retrieving conditions. Thus a retrieving title T accordant with the retrieving conditions is detected. When the retrieval is through with each binder, the total number of hits is displayed on a CRT display device 24. The retrieving action is stopped on an operator's judgement in case the number of hits is too large. Then the retriving conditions are supplied again and the retrieval is carried out to these conditions.
