PURPOSE:To obtain correct ignition timing control, following the variation in engine speed, by correcting the ignition timing of this-time ignition cycle by using a ratio of a least two engine speeds computed in the previous-time ignition cycle. CONSTITUTION:By using a crank angle sensor 13, the engine speeds at least two specified crank angle positions are detected, and each engine speed thus detected is stored in ROM 27. Next, a ratio between at least two engine speeds, which where stored in the previous ignition cycle, is computed, and by using the ratio thus computed the ignition timing of this-time ignition cycle is corrected. As started above, special attention is paid to the fact that the fluctuation in engine speed, which is caused by the variation in the torque generated by the engine during a cycle-to-cycle period, has a special tendency. Thus, based on the engine speeds detected one after the other, the subsequent variation in engine speed can be estimated precisely. As a result, the ignition timing can be controlled correctly even when the engine is in an accelerating or decelerating condition.
