The iron is obtd. in sheet or powder form on the cathode of an electrochemical cell, on the anode of which ferrous ions are oxidised to ferric ions. The cell current is carried by monovalent alkaline ions, e.g. sodium, through a membrane selectively permeable to the cations, which separates the anolyte from the catholyte. The current entering the cell is split into two, so that prodn. of iron on the cathode is electrically compensated by oxidn. of ferrous to ferric ions in the anolyte. The two currents are then combined on leaving the cell.
