PURPOSE:A graft copolymer excellent in membrane forming property, film strength, gas permeability coefficient, etc., and suitable for the production of membranes for separation of a gas mixture, obtained by incorporating a polyorganosiloxane chain in polyphenylene oxide. CONSTITUTION:The purpose graft copolymer is obtained by reacting polyphenylene oxide of formula I (wherein A is a halogen, methyl or the like) with a strong base and reacting the product with a polyorganosiloxane having a reactive group on one end, of formula II (wherein X is a halogen, Y is a bivalent organic group, Z is a polyorganosiloxane chain and R<1>-R<5> are each alkyl, phenyl or the like). This graft copolymer is composed of repeating units of formula III (wherein B<1> and B<2> are each H or formula IV and A<1> and A<2> are each methyl, formula V or the like) and has a molar ratio of the polyphenylene oxide repeating units in the main chain to the polyorganosiloxane repeating units in the side chains in the range of 80/20-10/90 and a MW of at least 10,000.
