PURPOSE:To enable a car to start and stop with ease on an uphill road by configurating a device in such a way that, when the car is suspended on the uphill road with brake applied, a detector detects the direction of a brake force allowing an electromagnetic valve to be closed, and brake fluid pressure is controlled so as to be retained as it is. CONSTITUTION:When a car is running on an uphill road, if a brake pedal is pressed, brake fluid pressure is built up in a master cylinder 11. Meanwhile, when attention is given to a wheel 17, brake linings of brake shoes 4a and 4b are pressed with pressure against a rotor 5 which rotates as an integral part of the wheel 17, as a result of the actuation of a wheel cylinder because of fluid pressure, and a brake force is produced. When the car is suspended followed by the disconnection of a clutch, the wheel is subjected to a reverse torque due to the gravity force. This causes the frictional force acting between the shoes 4a and 4b and the rotor 5 to be reversed in direction as compared with that for the time when brake has been applied, allowing a sliding anchor 6 to move to the left. Then, this causes a switch 9 to be turned on permitting a valve device 14 to be closed. So brake fluid pressure is retained up to a level same as that for the time when brake has been applied.
