The grass cutting unit may be placed at the end of a carrier arm (12) of a tractor. It comprises a downwardly open housing (3,8,10) supported on a roller (13) and containing a horizontal shaft (1) which is carried in ball bearings and driven at 2000-3000 rpm by a, preferably hydraulic, motor. - The shaft carries horizontally spaced sets of circumferentially spaced chains with cutters (2) at their outer ends with backwardly curved blades (7). The housing connects, via an opening, at its upper end, to a collecting box (11) at the rear, which is swivelable, preferably by a hydraulic cylinder (11a), to discharge the cuttings. Alternatively, a smaller fixed collecting box may be connected to a hose with suction fan to transfer the cuttings to a large capacity receptacle.
