METHOD OF MODIFYING PITCH

PURPOSE:To simply obtain a high-quality pitch suitable for use as a raw material for a carbon fiber at low cost, by mixing a petroleum pitch with an arom. oil having a ratio of hydrogen donating properties to hydrogen accepting properties higher than that of the petroleum pitch and heat-treating the mixture. CONSTITUTION:A petroleum pitch is mixed with an arom. oil which has a D/A ratio (ratio of hydrogen donating properties to hydrogen accepting properties) higher than that of the petroleum pitch and has not been subjected to any specific hydrogenation treatment for imparting hydrogen donating properties. The mixture is heat treated to obtain a modified pitch. The hydrogen donating properties (D) is the amount of hydrogen (mg/g-sample) which has participated in the formation of 9,10-dihydroanthracene when a sample is reacted with an equal weight of anthracene. The hydrogen accepting properties (A) is the amount of hydrogen (mg/g-sample) which has participated in the formation of anthracene when a sample is reacted with an equal weight of 9,10-dihydroanthracene.
