PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound by a simple electrolytic process in high yield at a reaction temperature of approximately room temperature without using an alcoholate catalyst requiring complicated handlings, by reducing electrolytically a substituted phenylacetic acid with paraformaldehyde in the presence of a substrate electrolyte. CONSTITUTION:A substituted phenylacetic acid shown by the formula I (R1 is 1-4C alkyl, aryl, alkenyl, or aralkyl; R2 and R3 are H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl, aryloxy, acyl, alkenyloxy, or OH) is electrolytically reduced preferably in the presence of a substrate electrolyte such as a quaternary ammonium salt shown by the formula II (R<1>-R<4> are alkyl; X<-> is group shown by the formula III, ClO4<->, etc.) or paraformaldehyde is electrolytically reduced in the presence of the substrate electroyte, the prepared reaction product is reacted with the substituted phenylacetic acid shown by the formula I, to give a substituted tropic acid shown by the formula IV. USE:An intermediate for drugs.
