PURPOSE:To obtain the processing capable of realizing a data compression ratio efficient for various pictures by extracting directional components from a partial construction of a picture, and selecting automatically the most suitable picture scanning system from the information. CONSTITUTION:After a picture read from a film reader unit 61 is A/D-converted, it is stored in a magnetic disk 63. An image processor 62 chops a partial picture from a picture in the magnetic disk 63 and extracts directional components with gradient. Then histgrams of values exceeding the specific threshold are generated in each direction, and peaks of these histgrams are extracted. The image processor 62 decides whether or not the overall picture is completely processed. When the processing is finished, the next partial picture is set and the similar processing is executed. The result is encoded and the partial picture is stored in an optical disk 64. By repeating such processing by one picture, compressed pictures are stored in the optical disk 64. |
