PURPOSE:To carry out magnetic recording and reproduction with excellent durability by regulating the 10-point mean surface roughness of the substrate of the recording medium to less than a specified value and controlling the central mean roughness of the surface of a magnetic recording head to be brought into sliding-contact with the medium to less than a specified value. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic recording medium 10 is obtained by using ethylene terephthalate film as a substrate 11 and successively laminating a metallic thin film 12, a vertical recording layer 13 and a protective layer 14 on both surfaces of the substrate. Meanwhile, a main magnetic pole 21 of 'Permalloy(R)' is supported by a core 22 of an Mn, Zn and Fe alloy in a vertical magnetic recording head 20 and a slider part 24 is provided to the surface which is brought into sliding-contact with the medium. The surface roughness of the substrate 11 is regulated to <=300Angstrom 10-point average roughness Ra in the medium 10. In the slider part 24 of the head 20, the surface to be brought into sliding-contact with the medium 10 is formed with a ceramic having <=0.1mum central average roughness Ra and the recording and reproduction are carried out by the head 20 and the medium 10. |
