PURPOSE:To obtain the titled medium having excellent resistance to corrosion and wear by providing a magnetic recording layer of a ferromagnetic thin film on a nonmagnetic substrate and further furnishing a layer of the oxide film of an alloy of Si and Co on the surface of the recording layer. CONSTITUTION:A nonmagnetic substrate 1 is made of plastic film such as polyethylene terephthalate or Al or glass having 5-100mum thickness. A nonmagnetic recording layer 2 is formed in 0.05-1.0mum thickness by the vacuum deposition of metals such as Fe, Co and Ni or the alloy contg. the elements. A protective film layer 3 consists of the oxide of an alloy of Si and Co and the thickness is preferably regulated to 50-500Angstrom . The effect as the protective and lubricating film is not exhibited at <50Angstrom and the clearance between a head and the magnetic recording layer 2 is increased and the recording and reproduction efficiency is decreased at >500Angstrom . The Si content in Co is preferably adjusted to 5-50at%. The effect in resisting corrosion is insufficient when Co is rich and the effect in decreasing the friction coefficient is small when the Co content is low.
