PURPOSE:To obtain the aimed substance in high selectivity and high yield, by using a compound having basic nitrogen-containing skeleton, carboxyl group and carboxylate group in the molecule thereof as a catalyst in obtaining the polyhydric alcohol by hydration reaction of an epoxy compound. CONSTITUTION:An epoxy compound is subjected to hydration reaction to give a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. ethylene glycol or glycerol. In the process, a compound having a basic nitrogen-containing skeleton, carboxyl group and carboxylate group in the molecule thereof, e.g. monoalkali metal salt of glutamic acid or monoalkali metal salt of aspartic acid, is used as a catalyst to carry out the reaction. The molar amount of the water to be used is 1.1-5 times based on one equivalent epoxy group (oxygen-containing 3-membered ring skeleton) in the epoxy compound. The reaction conditions are 80-200 deg.C under 5-30kg/cm<2>G pressure. EFFECT:The amount of the water can be remarkably reduced, and the hydration reaction can be carried out in a high concentration. Therefore, the reaction mass can be obtained as an aqueous solution of the aimed substance in the high concentration. |
