PURPOSE:To efficiently produce the titled substances by electrolytically reducing specified ortho- or paranitro-substituted-alkylbenzenes and paraformaldehyde and reacting the resulting reduced products with said ortho- or paranitro- substituted-alkylbenzenes. CONSTITUTION:Ortho- or paranitro-substituted-alkylbenzenes represented by formula I and paraformaldehyde are electrolytically reduced in the presence of a supporting electrolyte, or paraformaldehyde is electrolytically reduced in the presence of a supporting electrolyte. The resulting reduced products are reacted with substances represented by the formula I to produce 2-(nitrophenyl)-2-substituted-ethanols represented by formula II. In the formulae I, II, R1 is 1-4C optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or the like, R2 is H, halogen, nitro or the like, and n=1 or 2.
