PURPOSE:To obtain superior durability with simple constitution and to measure precisely a liquid level by providing an exciting coil and an element wire, a detection coil and a processing means, etc. CONSTITUTION:The exciting coil 8 is wound at one end side of an amorphous wire 1 and the detection coil 9 is wound at the other end side. The processing means which calculates a liquid level is connected to the coil 9. Then when a level gauge is fitted to a tank 2, a current output value in a state where the wire 1 is not dipped in liquid is read and, and the wire 1 is dipped in the liquid to specific length at every time to read current values corresponding to respective lengths of dipping. Further, the lengths of dipping corresponding to the successive current output values are calculated from the relation between the lengths of dipping and current output values. Liquid levels based upon the lengths of dipping are calculated and stored in an arithmetic part. Thus, liquid levels corresponding to current output values from the coil 9 are calculated and outputted.
