PURPOSE:To obtain the titled resin containing a compound having specific structure, and giving a coating film having improved properties when used as a crosslinking agent of a thermosetting paint, by the modification reaction of a mixture of melamine, solid paraformaldehyde and alcohol in an acidic atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:The objective resin containing >=50mol% compound of formula (1-4 groups in R1-R6 are H and the others are CH2OR<1>; R<1> is H, >=3C alkyl, etc.) can be produced by the modification reaction of (A) 1mol of melamine, (B) 2-5mol of solid paraformaldehyde (in terms of formaldehyde) and (C) 7-10mol of an alcohol (e.g. methanol) in an acidic atmosphere. EFFECT:A coating film having excellent hardness, flexibility, solvent-resistance, etc., and free of sagging and pinhole can be produced by adding 5-50pts.wt. of the present resin e.g. to a thermosetting synthetic resin paint, and curing the paint.
