PURPOSE:To remove both efficiently H2S and HCN by a simple device by the use of an easily obtainable, inexpensive catalyst, by bringing an industrial gas containing both H2S and HCN together with ammonia into contact with a catalyst containing an iron oxide and iron sulfide. CONSTITUTION:An industrial gas (e.g., coke oven gas, etc.) containing both H2S and HCN together with ammonia is brought into contact with a catalyst containing an iron oxide (preferably DARAI catalyst obtained by blending shaved waste of steel or casting with sawdust, and oxidizing blend, etc.) and/or iron sulfide (e.g., catalyst obtained by using iron oxide for desulfurization so that iron oxide is partially converted to iron sulfide, and piling prepared used catalyst and new catalyst in laminar state), so that both H2S and HCH are simultaneously eliminated.
