Process for forming a thin layer, coloured or otherwise, on a tanned leather. The said process is characterised in that it consists in: - stretching and securing the leather against a rigid surface, the epidermis being outwards; - applying by pressing the product to be applied in paste form with the aid of a spreading means, for example a doctor blade, the material constituting the said means having to be harder than that of the surface of the leather so that the leather grain is crushed as this means passes and that the layer of the applied product follows the relief of the leather. <IMAGE>
