PURPOSE:To execute focusing and its display stably and accurately even if an object is varied due to the vibration or movement of the object by weighting object image data of the object in accordance with an information volume effective for focus detection which is included in the object image data to be used at the time of focus detecting operation and averaging the weighted data. CONSTITUTION:A focus arithmetic means 10 for repeatedly outputting defocus signals d(i) indicating a distance between a projected focus position and an image forming position and the direction of the image forming position from the projected focus position with time series on the basis of object image data relating to object light passed through a photographing lens operates a defocus signal on the basis of the object image data relating the obtained object image and an effective information volume extracting means 11 extracts an information volume effective for the focus operation from the object image data. A statistical processing means 12 averages the defocus signal by weighting corresponding to the effective information volume signal to obtain a statistical defocus signal. Lens driving control/display control is executed on the basis of the statistical defocus signal.
