NEW MATERIAL:The 2-phenylcyclohexanone derivative of formula I (R<1> is 1-10C aliphatic alkyl; R<2> is 1-10C aliphatic alkyl or alkoxy, or halogen). EXAMPLE:trans-5-Methyl-2-(4-methylphenyl)cyclohexanone. USE:Useful as a component of a liquid crystal composition. It exhibits the property of liquid crystal. It is colorless, stable to heat, light and chemicals, and has high compatibility with other liquid crystal substances and high solubility of dyes. When the compound is used as a liquid crystal composition, the thershold voltage can be decreased, and a device having various advantageous properties such as steep voltage-transmittance characteristics, improved dependency to view angle, etc., can be obtained. PREPARATION:The compound of formula II is reduced to a boron adduct by hydroboration and oxidized with bichromic acid. The objective compound is separated from the resultant mixture of the cisisomer and trans-isomer of formula I.
