A terminal which is intended for the electrically conductive connection of a cable (1', 2'; 1'', 2'') without previous removal of its insulating sleeve (2', 2'') to a terminal body (3) in which a contact compression piece (16), which carries a rib (17), and a mating compression piece (40) which hold the cable between them are held such that they can move relative to one another. The force for moving the contact compression piece (16) and the mating compression piece (40) into a clamping position in which the rib (17) of the contact compression piece has penetrated the insulating sleeve (2', 2'') and has penetrated into the conductor (1', 1''), is transmitted via a spring element (15) which compensates for cold flow of the conductor and, at a predetermined spring movement in the compression direction, bridges over a stop which then carries out the further force transmission. Lateral jaws (25) having a plurality of bearing surfaces or edges centre the cable and ensure that the rib penetrates centrally into the conductor (1', 1'') even in the case of cables having different external diameters. <IMAGE>
