In a transmission remote control (1) for motor vehicles, especially commercial vehicles, a gear shift lever-side shift element (2) with a preferably essentially horizontal cable fixing plate and an essentially horizontal first connecting rod (8) fixed to the vehicle and horizontal separate cables (3, 4) is provided, by means of which an especially compact, flat construction of a gear shift lever bearing can be arranged. On the transmission side there is a translator (5), which in turn accommodates the separate cables in a vertical arrangement, an essentially vertical rotary plate and an essentially vertical, where necessary inclined second connecting rod (6) for a transmission side fixing. The translator is located to the side of the transmission directed upwards or downwards, so that altogether a narrow construction is achieved, as a result of which the translator can be built inside an existing vehicle frame width virtually in all known types of transmission (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
