The invention relates to a percussion instrument in order to achieve error-free measurements for diagnostic and testing purposes, which generates defined, constant mechanical shock pulses, individually or, as the case may be, periodically, with a magnetic, mobile ram independently of the distance of the test object and has a sensor integrated in the ram for measuring the braking process occurring during each impinging movement, as a result of which, with the aid of sensor signals obtained on two inner stops integrated in the instrument, automatic calibration of the instrument is carried out and the instrument function during the measurement process is monitored.
