PURPOSE:To maintain restored gloss over a long time, by applying predetermined pretreatment to the surface of a handrail before forming a thin film thereto by using a polishing agent with an acrylic/styrene polymer as its main constituent. CONSTITUTION:In regenerating the gloss of a handrail of which the gloss was lowered through the use at an escalator, water resistant emery paper is mounted to an orbital sander 2 and the surface of the handrail 1 is polished by said sander 2 to remove surface cracks. The same treatment is performed by water resistant polishing paper having different roughness to smooth the surface of the hand rail 1. Subsequently, the residue on the hand rail is removed by washing and, after wiping with dry cloth, the polishing agent with an acrylic/styrene polymer as its main constituent contained in soft cloth is uniformly applied to the surface of the hand rail 1 and dried naturally. By successively repeating this operation, the entire surface of the handrail of the escalator is polished.
