The subject-matter of the invention is a type body for typewriters or similar machines having characters which are arranged in a matrix and can be adjusted by moving the matrix in the X and Y directions relative to a platen and constitute only a small mass. The type bodies are moulded onto spring-mounted fingers of a strip and each bear a plurality of characters which are combined to form groups. According to another exemplary embodiment, the type heads of the one group are moulded onto one strip and the type heads of the other group are moulded onto another strip, the spring-mounted fingers each having the same length. This thus results in identical bending lines during the impression between the two groups of type heads.
