PURPOSE:To obtain the optical filter having a high light transmittance by interposing a solution of a mixture composed of a solvent contg. a monomer having a polymerizable unsat. group, and a liquid crystal material capable of displaying a cholesteric liquid crystal state by dissolving the liquid crystal material to the prescribed solvent, and an org. peroxide between a pair of substrates, and then by polymerizing the prescribed solution in an anaerobic atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal material and the solvent contg. the polymerizable unsatd. group and the org. peroxide are mixed, and the cholesteric liquid crystal solution is prepared by controlling the concentration and the temperature of the prescribed mixed solution. Further, the obtd. solution is interposed between the pair of the substrates so as to form a film of the prescribed liquid crystal solution, and then the liquid crystal solution is allowed to stand in the anaerobic atmosphere at the prescribed temperature followed by polymerizing it in the anaerobic atmosphere to form the film fixed the cholesteric liquid crystal in the polymer. The pitch of the cholesteric liquid crystal may be easily controlled, and also the direction of winding in a right or a left direction of the prescribed liquid crystal may be altered by selecting the sorts of the liquid crystal material and the prescribed solvent, and by changing the concentration of the liquid crystal solution and the polymerization temp. in the preparation of the liquid crystal solution.
