PURPOSE:To shorten the time to be required for automatic focusing by driving a photographing lens to prescribed direction and position in accordance with the luminance of an object when the detecting of a focusing position is discriminated as a disabled state. CONSTITUTION:A focusing point detecting circuit CAL calculates a defocus direction, and when the contrast of an object is below a prescribed value, outputs a low contrast signal. If a luminance discriminating means BRD discriminates that the luminance of the object is above a prescribed value under the output of the low contrast signal from the circuit CAL, the lens is scanned in the calculated defocus direction (on the proximity side or infinity side). When a focusing detectable position can not be detected even if the lens reaches one end of a movable range, the lens is scanned again in the direction to the other end. Consequently, the automatic focusing time required can be shortened. If the focusing position is not detected when a stand-by light mode is discriminated by a mode discriminating circuit ALM, the lens is delivered to the nearest end and kept at a state appropriate to storage. |
