PURPOSE:To utilize the titled reading method for the converting formation of a fine and purposeful radiation visible picture by detecting afterglow generated by a stimulable phosphor sheet after the irradiation of radiant rays, discriminating the characteristics of the radiation picture and adjusting the picture at the time of reading stage on the basis of the discriminated result. CONSTITUTION:A subject 202 e.g. is arranged between a conversion panel 202 and a radiant ray source 201 and the radiant ray source 201 is turned on, so that the transmitted radiation picture of the subject 202 is recorded and accumulated on the stimulable phosphor sheet 204 formed on a panel 203. Then, the afterglow generated by the phosphor 204 is detected through an optical transmission means 208 by turning on a switch of a photodetector 207. At that time, a carrying stage 209 is sub-scanned from upward to downward to detect the afterglow of the whole panel 203. The sequenced electric signals of the afterglow are amplified by an amplifier 211 and sent to a MAX/MIN value discriminating means 212 to discriminate the maximum and minimum luminance values on the picture. Since the quantity of afterglow is proportional to the accumulated capacity of energy to the phosphor 204, the maximum and minimum values of the afterglow are converted into the maximum and minimum values of energy on the basis of previously found conditions and stored in a storage means 214.
