This brake actuator has a rod (7) which can be adjusted either hydraulically by means of a piston (9) or mechanically by means of a swivel lever arrangement (26, 27, 29) and the continuation of which, shaped as a ball pin (20), is mounted in a limitedly swivel-movable manner in an axial swivel bearing (17), and as a result permits limited swivelling movements of the rod (7) upon mechanical actuation and upon changing from forward travel to reverse travel. All that is required for a short swivel shaft (27) is a single radial shaft seal (28) which can be arranged in a protected manner and is not subjected to swivelling movements. Apart from a swivel lever part (29) remote from the rod and connected to the said swivel shaft, all the other parts of the device are arranged with a completely pressure-tight seal in the brake cylinder housing (1), movable under oil, all the joints being protected both against dirt and damage as well as inadmissible adjustment, and also largely able to be integrated directly into a gear casing (3) in a space-saving manner. <IMAGE>
