CHARACTER RECOGNIZING DEVICE

PURPOSE:To recognize accurately characters by using a black ground lump extracting means for extracting a black ground including the strokes extracted overlappingly by a stroke extracting means after converting it into a black ground lump. CONSTITUTION:A picture memory 7 reads a geometric pattern of unknown characters and stores a white/black binary-coded input picture. A boundary labeling circuit 8 labels black picture elements positioned at the boundary part between the white and black grounds of the picture stored in the memory 7. A stroke extracting circuit 10 extracts a pair of substrokes from the data on the substrokes extracted by a substroke extracting circuit 9 and obtains stroke data. A character feature point extracting circuit 11 checks the positional relations among strokes based on the stroke data and extracts gyometic features. A black ground part where the strokes are overlappingly extraced is extracted by a black ground lump extracting part 12 in the form of a black ground lump.
