The circumferential wall of a plastic/metal compound roll (10) has a fibre-reinforced roll core (24) and, lying on the latter, a plurality of metallic layers: a base layer (29), which is an auxiliary layer in the production of the surface of the roll or in the establishment of special properties of the said surface, a surface layer (30) consisting of a material which determines the essential properties of the surface of the roll, and protective layers (32, 34) lying above these. Both the base layer (29) and the surface layer (30) are produced by thermal spraying of material. <IMAGE>
