NEW MATERIAL:The tetrahydro-beta-carboline derivative of formula I (R<1> is carboxy, carbamoyl, etc.; R<2> is H, lower alkyl or lower hydroxy-alkyl; R<1> and R<2> may together form -CO-O-CH2-; R<3> is H, lower alkyl, phenyl-substituted lower alkyl or CSSR<4>; R<4> is H or alkyl; n is 0, 1 or 2) or its salt. EXAMPLE:(3RS)-2-dithiocarboxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-beta-carboline-3-carb oxylic acid disodium salt. USE:Remedy and preventive for hepatopathy. Usable safely to viral hepatitis, alcoholic hepatitis, jecur adiposum, etc. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the compound of formula II (R<5> is H, lower alkyl, etc.) with carbon disulfide in the presence of a solvent (e.g. water, methanol, etc.) preferably at 10-30 deg.C.
