PURPOSE:To increase the size of a liquid crystal display element without spoiling display quality by setting the angle between the polarizing axes of upper and lower polarizing plates within a 70-55 deg. range and using a material contg. a fluorescent material as the liquid crystal compsn. thereof. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display element is of a twisted nematic type and the polarizing axes of the upper and lower polarizing plates thereof are so set as to have 70-55 deg. angle with each other. The material obtd. by adding a fluorescent material coumarin 6 or coumarin 7 to ZLI1701 is used as the liquid crystal material. The interference color is therefore inconspicuous and the rising characteristic of contrast is made steep even if the angle of the polarizing axes is narrowed.
