PURPOSE:To provide the titled oligomer having excellent film-forming properties and adhesion, by reacting two amic acid compds. in the presence of a solvent. CONSTITUTION:Amic acid compds. of formula I or said compd. and an amic acid compd. of formula II [wherein R<1> is a tetravalent carbocyclic arom. group and R<2> is a trivalent carbocyclic arom. group, carbonamide and carboxyl to be attached thereto are bonded to different ring atoms, respectively, carbonamide is bonded at 0-position against a carboxyl group; R<2>, R<3>, R<8> are each a group of formula III, IV, V or VI; s is 1-4; R<4>, R<5>, R<7> are each a 1-6C alkyl, phenyl, etc.; X is alkoxy, halogen, etc.; m, n are each 1-3 and m+n>=3; r is 2, 3; m+ n<=p<=2(m+n)-1; r<=q<=2r-1] are reacted in the presence of not more than 70wt% solvent at 60-200 deg.C for 0.2-6hr to obtain a soluble imide oligomer having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.05-0.5dd/g as calculated by formula VII [wherein eta is measured with an Ubbelohde's viscometer in N-methyl-2- pyrrolidone at 30+ or -0.01 deg.C, concn. (c) 0.5g/dl], represented by formula VIII (wherein x, y are mol numbers satisfying the relationship of formula IX).
